Sir F. Bertie to Sir Edward Grey.--(Received April 2.)
(No. 53.)
Paris, April 2, 1909. (Telegraphic.) P.
WITH reference to my telegram No. 52 of to-day, in regard to the Hankow-Canton Railway, I have the honour to report that at the meeting held this afternoon the German Delegates again stated that they would not withdraw the offer made by them to the Chinese. They are, however, making a fresh attempt to obtain a modification of the terms of the offer, and at their request the meeting was adjourned till 11 o'clock to-morrow morning, in order to enable them to receive a reply to the telegram which they have sent to Peking on the subject.
